Soap Holder and Antique Store Finds

A couple of weeks ago, Pam from basketsnprims posted a picture of a soap holder she won on ebay. I absolutely loved it and asked her if she would mind if I did a tutorial on it. Below is a picture of hers. To see where she has it displayed and more pictures of her gorgeous kitchen, click here.

I searched every thrift store and dollar store in my area, but couldn't find a round wooden bowl. I did find a square one at WalMart for either $1.97 or $2.97 that I thought would work just fine. I first made a pattern with curves similar to Pam's but decided that it didn't look quite right with the square bowl, so I went with a simpler look.

You should be able to click on the pattern below and print it out. Tape it together, matching up the lines and cut out.

You'll need a 13" piece of 1x8 pine board, a wood bowl and a 3" square concrete nail.

With a miter saw, cut the bowl in half.

Trace the pattern onto the 1x8 pine board and cut out. Drill a 1/2" hole at the top for hanging and then sand both the base piece and the bowl half. Wipe off excess sawdust and glue bowl to base.

When completely dry, paint as desired and add nail.

I think this turned out pretty good. I still like Pam's better, but this will work for me. And after seeing this picture, I'm thinking curvy sides may not have looked bad after all! Well, I do have the other half of the bowl. . . . !!!

I made a couple of trips to an antique store that's near by me. On my first trip I found this old bucket for $10.00 and this 12 tube candle mold for only $29.00!! I saw some like this one on ebay selling for $49.00 and up.
The second time I went, I found these lanterns. The revere lantern on the left was $24.00 and the ship lantern was $22.00. When I got home, I realized that the ship lantern is exactly like the one that I bought (and posted a couple of months ago) from one of my favorite prim stores. I paid $29.00 for it.

On my last trip there, I bought this wire basket for $12.00 and this basket cubby for $15.00. The baskets fit straighter in the cubby than what the picture shows, I just forgot to fix them before I took the picture!

  22. Hi Kris,
Pam had emailed me the night she put in a bid for the soapkeep. I remember counting down the last few minutes until she won it. I loved it too and made one that very week for myself! Luckily I had some unpainted round bowls left over from my gatherings. The tricky part was cutting that bowl in half! I'd love to send you a picture of mine. Stop by my site and leave an email where I can send you some pics. Hugs, Loretta
